Our 5th homeschool year as begun. We started the week after my parents went home from their visit with us and have been going strong ever since. This is my first year with 3 full time students. Addison the 4th grader, James the 3rd grader and Isabelle the Kindergartner. She is 5.5 years old and ready to hit the books with the big boys. She is loving every minute of it and I am really enjoying having her join us.
I implemented a new routine of little ones first thing in the morning, singing songs, making and learning shapes and colors. It has worked out perfectly for us because they get some mommy time in right at the start of the day, and seem to be content with playing together without me or the other kids for a couple hours with not too many interruptions from them.
OUR CURRICULUM
Together we are all doing Mystery of History along with some Story of the World, Peril and Peace(later in the year we will switch to Monks and Mystics) and Trial and Triumphs. Along with some Netlfix shows, you tube shows or discovery streaming videos that correspond with our lessons. As James learns best from a screen, unfortunately, we have had to make that work for us.
We also do Answers In Genesis Science together. Isabelle gets the beginner section with some beginner questions and the big boys often have a worksheet,quiz or hands-on project to go with the lesson.
The last thing we do together is Bible, we are using Apologia's Bible this year and I have really liked it. We also do scripture memory and quiet Bible reading during the day.
We are using First Language Lessons and Writing with Ease for Language Arts this year, as well as All About Spelling and Handwriting without Tears for James and Isabelle (Addison has outgrown that series as he has gone through ALL of their workbooks)
Isabelle and James are using Math-U-See and Addison has started Teaching Textsbooks math this year, which I love and can't wait until I can transition all the kids into it. Very little work on my part, yet he is learning just the same.
We have a list of read-alouds, we don't do them every day, or even every week. we just pick the best literature that corresponds with our history curriculum and read them as they fit in.
I have really enjoyed everything we are doing this year. I hope to add a separate Geography and a 2nd Language to our list for next year, but for now, we are loving what we are doing.
We are so blessed to be starting another year of homeschooling and pray God blesses each of us throughout the year in our own unique ways.
