We are getting a hands on experience of the life cycle of a Butterfly.Every year their are nests of eggs of caterpillars in a tree in our yard. They hatch and fall int he yard every year, this year we got a new tent for theboys to play in and it happened to be right under one of the nest of eggs. This year we have had a pleasure of watching them turn into Pupa, or a Chrysalis, and caught a couple caterpillars in a bug collector and one has turned into a Pupa, or Chrysalis, right before our eyes. It's been a fun experience and homeschool project for us. Life experiences are one of my favorite ways to teach the kids.
The kids are really excited to have about a dozen Pupae on their tent and have been being very careful to care for them and leave them alone and look at them each day. We cannot wait to watch a butterfly(or moth, we're not sure yet) emerge from each one of these Pupae, we can't wait to have dozens of butterflies(or moths) in our yard for at least a few days. What great fun we are having learning the lifescycle of caterpillars/butterflies(moths).
